Art Inspirations: Digital Art, Movement in Art, Immersive Art, and the Future of Art

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

I've been thinking a lot about where I want to push my own art and capabilities as an artist. While there will always be an appreciation for the beauty of a static two-dimensional painting, I've been wanting to delve into the future of art and how, as artists, we can continue to push these boundaries beyond the canvas.

I wonder what kind of art I would create if my own inexperience and resources weren't limiting me. I'm wanting to explore movement and visual effects and projection or light as a medium to create a visual experience I couldn't otherwise do with a paintbrush and canvas. In some cases, I want to use this style to augment my paint and canvas art.

It's hard to put a finger on the line between this sort of visual artistry and filmography, and I suppose in some cases there is no line at all. However, in order for me to learn the techniques I need to learn, I have to make some sort of shape and definition to my ambition.

Below I've highlighted some various artists which capture the type of futuristic and fluid art that inspire me.

Jesse Woolston

Jesse Woolston captures movement, colour, and energy to create an immersive experience. See their works "Dissolution", and "Colour Theory" captured above.

In "Dissolution", I love the use of particulates, shape, movement, and colour. "Colour Theory" captures the palette of nature, and has the movement and scale I'd like to explore when thinking about curating immersive and exciting experiences for the viewer.

Refik Anadol

Refik Anadol is another artist to pioneer this "genre" of futuristic art. They use projection technology and architecture to create an immersive and inspiring approach. They speak about using light and data as pigments, each piece has it's own unique programming.

Imaginary Forces

Perhaps a more film-centric example, yet a piece of art in itself. AppleTV's "Foundation" title screen sequence is similar to this genre, with particulates in fluid motion, like glittering sand. Created by team at Imaginary Forces.
